Description: This two-story high school in Northern Wisconsin serves approximately 600 students and provides a comprehensive learning environment, including a variety of general and specialized classrooms, commons, band and choir rooms, media and technology center, a 750-seat auditorium, a 200-meter regulation indoor track and four full-sized basketball courts. The fieldhouse provides seating for 2,600 and is one of the largest in the state. These facilities were designed to serve the entire school district, as well as the wider community on a year-round basis. The design emphasized daylight, views, energy efficiency and a deep commitment to sustainability. High-performance lighting with a reduced lighting power density, photosensor controls, a highly efficient HVAC system and a photovoltaic renewable energy system contribute to the overall energy savings. The sustainable features will help the school district achieve lower operational and maintenance costs through the facility’s reductions in water and energy costs over the life of the building. The project is also dedicated to using the building and the construction process to teach future generations of students how the school is having a minimal impact on the environment, while maintaining a healthy space with superior energy efficiency. Northland Pines is among the first LEED certified schools in Wisconsin and was the first LEED Gold public high school in the United States.
