Description: Hubble Middle School, the first LEED for Schools project for Vertegy, serves the Warrenville and Wheaton areas of Illinois, just outside of Chicago. The project was funded through a bond issue, and the team worked diligently with the school board to build the LEED requirements into the referendum. The team's goal of certifying this project under LEED for Schools at a Silver level was exceeded, and the team achieved Gold in May of 2010. Specific sustainable features include highly reflective roofing materials in addition to a small green roof, use of native and adapted plantings to eliminate the need for irrigation, more than 35% reduction in potable water use, diversion of more than 82% of construction and demolition waste from landfill (more than 960 tons total) and inclusion of low-emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpet systems and composite woods.
