Description: This new 56,400-square-foot facility was built after the liberal arts college, which has roots dating back to 1858, had encountered increasing enrollment for several years. The four-story academic center was constructed on the current campus and includes state-of-the-art classrooms, faculty and administration offices, a coffee shop, multiple lounges, a basement with mechanical equipment that will serve future expansion needs on the campus and a multi-purpose room and small kitchen for minor catering needs. The new academic center is the first new building on a college campus to be LEED certified. Sustainable features incorporated into the project include water-efficient flush and flow fixtures, light-colored concrete to reduce the heat island effect, a crushed limestone trail walking path that also decreases storm water runoff, an outdoor air delivery monitoring system and recycled, regionally sourced and environmentally sensitive materials. Refrigerants were also carefully chosen with regard to their ozone-depleting and global warming potentials, and the team utilized low-emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings and carpet systems throughout the facility.
