Description: Vertegy served as the LEED Consultant for the first North American operation for the Volkswagen corporation in more than 20 years. Volkswagen’s vision for responsible growth was underscored by their commitment to being an environmental steward and their desire to seek LEED certification for the facility. The project was designed and constructed with energy efficiency and sustainable site development as primary goals, and consists of a body shop, general assembly building, paint shop, administrative office area, conference center and technology center. Volkswagen provided vegetated open space equal to 20% of the project’s site area, or more than 3.1 million square feet. These areas are aggregated in larger spaces outside of the base LEED boundary in order to create a buffer between the facility and the adjacent natural areas. This strategy helps to more effectively create and restore habitat areas to the complex. More than 4,600 tons of construction and demolition waste were diverted from landfill, and through combined strategies, the facility saves over 1,736,000 gallons of potable water each year.
