Description: Volkswagen continues to demonstrate its commitment to the environment with its investment in another LEED certified facility. Located at 2560 Buttermilk Road in Lenoir City, Tenn., the South East Regional Distribution Center was built to support the multiple automotive dealerships that are located throughout the Southeastern region of the U.S. The 527,447-square-foot facility incorporates multiple sustainable features, including a compliant white roof to help reduce the heat island effect and increase the insulation value of the building, green space that is greater than 40 percent of the project’s site area, a highly efficient building envelope, onsite detention basins to accommodate storm water, native vegetation with drought-resistant characteristics, skylights to allow natural daylight into the warehouse area, and recycled and regionally sourced materials. Approximately 87 percent of the construction demolition waste was also diverted from the landfill by way of reuse and recycling centers. The site also includes a 100-car parking lot with Carpool and Low-emission, Fuel-efficient (LEFE) parking and four bike racks to accommodate 6.45 percent of the long-term employee population. Vertegy served as the LEED Consultant on the project, helping the owners achieve LEED Silver certification in June 2013.
